The Foundation of Advanced Veterinary Practice A module (A-FAVP) replaces the Professional Key Skills A module (A-PKS) and Clinical Key Skills B module (B-CKS.0) for new CertAVP candidates enrolling with the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) from 1st August 2012. Enrolment in A-PKS at the RVC will cease on 1st August and enrolment in A-FAVP will be available at the RVC from 1st September 2012.

Please note that candidates who have achieved the A-PKS will be deemed to have met the RCVS A module requirement. Candidates who are currently enrolled on an A-PKS module offered by a recognised provider will be deemed to have met this requirement when they have completed the module. Candidates who have not achieved A-PKS and who are not currently enrolled on a A-PKS module offered by a recognised provider, may, with effect from a date (yet to be confirmed by RCVS) only meet the RCVS requirement by achieving the module A-FAVP. Candidates currently enrolled on A-PKS and/or B-CKS at the RVC who wish to transfer to A-FAVP at the RVC may do so.

AIM

As well as providing a general foundation for development of the extended and expanded knowledge and skills required by advanced veterinary practitioners, the A-FAVP module prepares candidates for the academic learning and assessment requirements of B and C modules. Also in accordance with RCVS policy, the module seeks to confirm certain fundamental aspects of professional understanding required by veterinary practitioners working within the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct. Finally, the module seeks to promote the development of various key or transferable skills which underpin success in education, employment, lifelong learning and personal development. The module is therefore relevant to the learning needs of candidates in a wide range of veterinary roles.

The aim of the module is to provide a foundation for advanced veterinary practice. Its specific objectives are:

To develop the foundation knowledge and skills required for advanced veterinary practice.

To confirm that CertAVP candidates comprehend and can critically apply the professional requirements described in the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct.

To develop candidates as independent learners not just as preparation for further CertAVP modules but also to meet life-long professional and personal learning needs and obligations.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the module, candidates will be able to:

Describe the thinking and decision-making processes required for advanced professional practice.

Demonstrate a working knowledge of the principles of emergency care (including first aid, pain relief, euthanasia and emergency slaughter) in all species that might be encountered by veterinarians in general practice in the UK.

Explain the roles and responsibilities which veterinary surgeons have in relation to protecting animal and human health.

Interpret and appraise their obligations towards animal welfare and professional conduct as laid down in the RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct.

Describe the reasons for maintaining and improving the quality and safety of the service they provide and the means of achieving this.

Demonstrate the following key skills required for advanced professional and personal development

Communicate confidently and effectively in order to achieve their professional objectives.

Evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses and demonstrate the importance of maintaining and developing professional competence.

Gather, organise, analyse, interpret and present complex data and information for the purpose of advanced professional and personal development.

The module value (10 credits) is to be allocated to each learning outcome in generally equal proportions. Candidates who enrol in A-FAVP will not be required to complete B-CKS and will need to do either 1 practice B module and 4 C modules or 2 practice B modules and 3 C modules. Please read the module outline in the attachement below for full details.

International Animal Health CPD
