The hospitalisation of the feline patient can be challenging. The aims are to provide necessary physical healthcare while ensuring the protection of the patient’s mental well-being. These aims overlap considerably as the physical, emotional and cognitive health of the individual all impact on one another.

Why do this course
Behavioural medicine is an important veterinary discipline and considering the emotional, cognitive and physical health of patients will help you to promote good welfare in non-human species.

This webinar will explore the current recommendations for when to use a renal diet in conjunction with the IRIS staging system. It will explore the pathophysiology and use available evidence base to demonstrate where these recommendations have originated from. It includes an introduction to the new biomarker fibroblast growth factor 23 which is being developed for clinical use as a biomarker of CKD-mineral and bone disorder and now forms part of the IRIS recommendations for dietary decision making in cats with CKD. Case examples will be used throughout the webinar to provide demonstration of how the science can be applied to clinical cases.

Are you diagnosing it by exclusion or have you an objective and practical way of investigating it?

A certain degree of mystique and uncertainty surrounds many diagnoses of back and sacroiliac pain. This course will explore the anatomy, investigation and treatment of this multifactorial condition covering the back, sacroiliac and lumbosacral joints. We will focus on objective assessment, when to block, optimising your radiographs and how to ultrasound the back, lumbosacral and sacroiliac regions. The information will be highly practical and relevant to the equine practitioner.

Correct identification of pain emanating from the back and sacroiliac region is integral when deciding on the most appropriate treatment and consequently achieving the best outcome. Delegates will end the course feeling more confident in their diagnostic workup and, in particular in their imaging strategy using both radiography and ultrasound. The course is aimed at both recent graduates and more experienced practitioners who want to increase their confidence in handling this common presenting complaint.

The course will focus on ways to secure an accurate diagnosis, what we should do initially and during follow up assessments. Case examples will be presented to clarify the information.

In this webinar Acute kidney injury (AKI) in dogs and cats will be covered. The webinar will focus on understanding how we define AKI (hospital versus community acquired), underlying causes, making an early diagnosis of AKI and will look in depth at how we can best manage these patients in the hospital environment with facilities that are available to everyone. At the end of the webinar however, the role that renal replacement therapy (dialysis) can play in these patients with AKI and consider which patients are appropriate for dialysis and what impact this can have on their management and outcome is discussed.

Characterised by increased serum creatinine, acute uraemia and changes in UOP, the potential causes of AKI will be explored including pre-renal, intrinsic and post-renal.

AKI can develop in cases of pre-existing CKD or may lead to chronic disease if not treated quickly and effectively. The relationship between AKI and CKD will be considered alongside the value of various diagnostic tests and procedures, to include discussion on the phases of AKI and how the disease can be staged. Treatment options will be reviewed including specialised methods of treatment and when these may be indicated.

Designed for qualified veterinary nurses or experienced student nurses wishing to update their knowledge and develop their confidence in this area.

Behavioural medicine is the discipline that deals with the emotional health of our patients and the link with physical disease. Emotional health is equally important to physical health and understanding it needs to be considered as a day one skill for the veterinary profession just as much as it is for human medical professionals. There are a range of normal emotional systems and associated behavioural responses and in order to determine emotional motivation it is important to understand species specific signals and to remember that all behaviour must also be interpreted in context. Assessing emotional health is a vital part of the diagnostic process in behavioural cases but it is also essential in order to determine when emotional health is impacting on physical health presentations.

Why do this course
Behavioural medicine is an important veterinary discipline and considering the emotional, cognitive and physical health of patients will help you to promote good welfare in non-human species.

One of the main reasons for general veterinary practices being reluctant to offer behavioural services is a perception that it takes too much time. Individual consultations for specific behavioural presentations are indeed time consuming but this webinar will consider the many other opportunities for practices to be behaviourally aware and make a positive impact on the emotional health and well being of their patients. It will discuss the impact of behavioural awareness on the welfare of patients during the veterinary experience and on the way in which clinical decisions are made and physical health cases are managed.
