What’s new in decision making for dietary management of feline CKD?

Understanding the reasons for using a renal diet in feline chronic kidney disease and how new biomarkers may enhance our ability to decide when to start and how to modify dietary intervention.

This webinar will explore the current recommendations for when to use a renal diet in conjunction with the IRIS staging system. It will explore the pathophysiology and use available evidence base to demonstrate where these recommendations have originated from. It includes an introduction to the new biomarker fibroblast growth factor 23 which is being developed for clinical use as a biomarker of CKD-mineral and bone disorder and now forms part of the IRIS recommendations for dietary decision making in cats with CKD. Case examples will be used throughout the webinar to provide demonstration of how the science can be applied to clinical cases.

Partially positive nerve blocks, ambiguous radiographic findings and equivocal ultrasound images – how to optimise the work up of distal limb lameness.

This webinar will focus on nerve blocks, radiography and ultrasound of the foot, pastern and fetlock region. We look at how to interpret positive and negative responses to each nerve block highlighting potential pitfalls. We also discuss the most useful radiographic projections and tips to improve their diagnostic value, including the use of contrast tenograms. A certain degree of mystique and uncertainty surrounds many diagnoses of back and sacroiliac pain. This course will explore the anatomy, investigation and treatment of this multifactorial condition covering the back, sacroiliac and lumbosacral joints. We will focus on objective assessment, when to block, optimising your radiographs and how to ultrasound the back, lumbosacral and sacroiliac regions. The information will be highly practical and relevant to the equine practitioner.

Correct identification of pain emanating from the back and sacroiliac region is integral when deciding on the most appropriate treatment and consequently achieving the best outcome. Delegates will end the course feeling more confident in their diagnostic workup and, in particular in their imaging strategy using both radiography and ultrasound. The course is aimed at both recent graduates and more experienced practitioners who want to increase their confidence in handling this common presenting complaint.

Characterised by increased serum creatinine, acute uraemia and changes in UOP, the potential causes of AKI will be explored including pre-renal, intrinsic and post-renal.
