The liver plays a central role in a wide range of physiological processes ranging from energy and protein metabolism to detoxifying harmful substances and producing factors important in blood clotting and fighting infection. Liver disease is not uncommon in horses and can range from very mild abnormalities detected on routine blood work to life-threatening disease with dramatic clinical signs. The lecture will give an overview of liver function and describe the most common liver diseases that can affect horses of all ages.
